Charley Bowers, last name Bicolo in France, is a puzzle in the history of American cinema. Equipped with an out-of-the-ordinary personality, he made, over the course of a quarter century, an amazing career. Animation producer from 1915 to 1921, he directed and interpreted about 20 major burlesque works towards the end of the 20’s, mixing live-action shots and puppet animation shot by shot. Fanciful and a lover of myth, Bowers invented a unique imaginary world, surreal and completely uncontrolled. Acclaimed by André Breton and the surrealist movement, Bower’s genius nevertheless disappeared towards the end of the 30’s. |
