Since 2006, Lobster has been producing with Steamboat Films the Design collection. The series invite the audience on a journey in time. Archive images illustrate the political, social and cultural situation of a defined chapter from our past, via film extracts, cultural presentations, popular music etc. The history of the object itself, its conception, creators, fabrication and a contemporary frame story join in to build a bridge between the past and the present. 15 films have been produced so far: Serge Mouille’s black lamps by Danielle Schirman ![]() For past few years, documentaries, P.R. films, and magazines have allowed our curiosity to explore facets of the real that surprise, fascinate, revolt or intrigue us. Here are some of our latest productions: GENERATION PRECAIRE, DERRIERE LES MASQUES Documentary by Ruxandra Médréa. 52’. France. Between October 2005 and May 2006, we followed the birth of the new movement: “Génération précaire” (The Precarious generation). Close to their reflections and actions, this film chronicles and analyses the mobilization and engagement of this youths movement, at the critical moment when social unrest creeps out from the dark and feeds an important public debate? In the first time, those youths accepted to speak with their heads uncovered by their symbol: a white mask. A BORD DU NORMANDIE ( On Board the Normandie ) Documentary by Eric Lange and Claude Villers. 52' "A Bord du Normandie" traces life on board the ship during its last journey and explores the destiny of the legendary boat. Up until recently, only black and white images of the Normandie had been seen. In 1932, however, colr images were shot by an amateur filmaker: Jean Vivié. These films have remained invisible until today. These spectacular images illustrate the journey from Paris to New York, graced with an unparalleled emotional power. For the first time, we discover the famous red chimneys, the sumptuous décor with the gold-lacquered rooms and the mosaics in the swimming pool. Among the passengers enjoying a golden life, we also run into Antoine de Saint Exupéry, on board a ship where the story of the Normandie echoes history between the wars. FROM SHTETL TO SWING (Arte, April 2006) Emigrating from Eastern Europe, Jewish artists shaped America’s musical culture. From the Old Continent’s shadowy Shtetls to the lights of Broadway, this is the story of an unknown odyssey. An Arte France, Artline Films and Lobster Films, Thirteen / WNET New York, WETA Washington DC co-production (France, USA, 2005, 56 mins) . A film by Fabienne Rousso-Lenoir THE RHINOCODON: A SHARK MADE IN TAIWAN ( Thalassa ) Taiwan is the first producer and consumer of shark meat on the planet (fifty thousand tons a year). It is also one of the only places in the world where rhinocodon (the “whale-shark”) is eaten. Despite the rhinocodon inscription on the BONN convention identifying wildlife in need of protection, Taiwan is the last country where fishing this animal is authorized. Lobster investigated this for Thalassa. Aired in 2004, Thalassa, directed by Philippe Lallet. PARIS SOUS LES EAUX (Flooded Paris) France 5, February 2004 Is Paris, sheltered from a great flood in the 21st Century, one similar to the catastrophe that paralyzed the capital at the beginning of the 20th Century. In PARIS SOUS LES EAUX, Michel Royer and Serge Bromberg unravel the possible scenarios of a catastrophe announced a long time ago, and taken seriously only recently. Unseen filmed images of the 1910 Paris flood are studied confronted with a rising of the water recreated in digital images. All the people concerned with the prevention of this risk offer their point of view. This film is a Lobster Films / INA Entreprise co-production, broadcast in 2004 on France 5 /TV5, selected by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the "Image de France" production fund. DES AILES DES HEROS (Winged Heroes) France 3, December 2004. In association with INA Entreprise, Lobster paid tribute to those who realized one of mankind's oldest dreams: flying. DES AILES DES HEROS is a 90 minute documentary directed by Isabelle Clarke and Daniel Costelle. It was broadcast on France 3 as the first part of an evening celebrating the Centennial of the birth of aviation (1903-2003). It earned a huge success, both esteem and audience wise. LES PRETRES OUVRIERS (Laborer priests) France 5, April 2004 LES PRETRES OUVRIERS, missionaries in the working class, is a 52 minute documentary directed by Robert Mugnerot, based upon an idea by François Garçon. The film traces the history of the laborer priests in France. Half a century after the movement's ban by the Vatican, France 5 is proud to present this film in its historical series "Les Repères de l'Histoire", at the end of March. LES PREMIERS PAS DU CINEMA (The first steps of cinema, in search of Sound) Histoire, 2003/2004 Over one hundred years of dreams through cinema, Eric Lange and Serge Bromberg tell the story of the history of sound and color on the screen, in Cinema's First Steps, in two 52 minutes parts: "A la recherche du son" (In Search of Sound) was broadcast on the HISTOIRE channel in 2003 and presented at the FIPA in the "Situation de la création française" section. In 2004, "Un rêve en couleurs" (A Dream in Colors) will be broadcast on the same channel. PANAMA, HISTOIRES D'IDENTITÉS (France 5, Oct. 2003) Philippe Richard collected accounts of four Panamanians, thanks to which he retraces the story of this young country in search of identity. This is the history of its identity, and of its canal as well. AND ALSO On the occasion of the Annecy Animation Festival in 2003, Lobster followed Bill Plympton across the United States, in search of young animation talents. A TRASHORAMA, signed Federico Vitali and Frédéric Temps will let you discover the politically incorrect animation universe. The Canal + audience much appreciated this project. In addition, great causes are also of interest to Lobster, who produced numerous 52 minute films for the Téléthon, a television fundraiser for handicapped children and adults. Alice au pays de la sirène ( Alice in Mermaid Land ) confronts the various operating modes in which France and Denmark take into consideration handicap (Téléthon 2003). La Grande Promesse du Téléthon is another example of such work, made in collaboration with the AFM, L'association française contre les myopathies (the French association against myopathy) and France 2 (Téléthon 2000). GUERIR ( To Heal ) is a notable 52 minute piece on the search for THE cure. In another register, et us not forget Le Vinyle fait de la résistance, (Vinyl in resistance), made for France 5 in 2001. Hollywood Confidential, the history of the Mafia in the film industry in 2002, the Théma evenings on Arte, on the Marx Brothers and on the gag and also the co-produced documentaries based on archival material Charlot et son double (Chaplin and his double); a Théma on perfume; unknown images of the Twentieth century. Most of the above-mentioned titles are available through our catalog. ![]() The Lobster programs are inevitably oriented towards the collection's treasures: the program RETOUR DE FLAMME, presented by Serge Bromberg, revives each month lost gems of the cinema for the greatest pleasure of the Ciné Classics channel audience. SYLVA, a monthly magazine presented by Arte, focuses on the international activity of the forest world and environment. It was broadcast between April 2002 and August 2003. Another Lobster production ANIMAG, is the channel Arte's animation magazine, a bi-monthly 26 minutes film on the world of animation, its creators, its fabrication secrets, its forgotten treasures. CELLULO was Lobster's main production from 1995 to 2002. It was programmed daily on La Cinquième for a 6 month, offering period a vast panorama of animation films from the Golden Age of cartoons to the most recent creations. Ca tourne, Bromby (Rolling, Bromby!) animated each morning the children program from 6.50 AM to 8.50AM, from 1999 to 2001. SLAPSTICK and CARTOON FACTORY are other examples of landmark series on slapstick comedies and animation of the Golden Age. Lobster also develops significant short documentaries, conceived to be broadcast on television and on the Internet: one is Dis-moi ton nom (Tell Me Your Name), a series of 40 x 2'30'' on the origins of family names, broadcast on TV5, the other is BOUCHE ET DOUBLE, still in development. ![]() In a complimentary vein, and always with the same enthusiasm, Lobster has also distinguished itself these past years with the production of institutional films on an international scale, for prestigious clients: CD-Roms for learning French for Microsoft, clips to encourage the study of French and German for French High School students, the French Embassy in Germany and for the Goethe Institut. To ensure these productions, Lobster has a complete numerical post-production unit (editing, special-effects, mixing, graphic design) at its disposal, along with a talented team for all fields. |
